Writing an About Me page

The secret to NOT spending 50-60 hours writing an About Me page

Hi Community!

We took my kids to see the movie Inside Out 2 last week. Seeing the main character Riley’s brain undergo reconstruction in puberty, I kept catching myself thinking: “Wow, what a great visual representation of my curriculum framework.”

I’ll try not to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, but the introduction of the belief system as a woven cord stemming from each memory—and what happens when you suppress trickier or more sensitive memories—oh, that storyline and those visuals were art to my teacher-storyteller mind.

Riley’s brain

It’s one of the more distinctive aspects of my curriculum-–understanding what to do with those sensitive, trickier bits of our human consciousness, and having a framework that adapts and allows each person to work out the story matter (memories) in a way that is safe and empowering.

If in your business you want to have captivating messaging, attractive leadership presence, a memorable mission, and clear differentiation that brings aligned people to you… you’re probably already aware of the importance of your founder's story being a part of that messaging.

But if you’ve ever been blocked while trying to get that story out, you’re not alone and there's a good reason for it!

… I had a TV journalist (a professional storyteller!) share with me that she put off writing their law school personal statement because sitting down to tell their personal story felt way too uncomfortable….

…I had another client share with me that they spent 50-60 hours trying to write their About Me page on their website and still don’t have a final draft to put up…

…I worked with a multi-7-figure entrepreneur and marketer whose “About Me” page said for years before working with me: “This page isn’t about me, it’s about you” as a way of side-stepping writing her personal story because she was convinced she “didn’t have a story”.

I think all of us can relate to Riley from Inside Out. Our brain & emotions are working SO HARD to keep us safe. And we live through sooooo many uncomfortable, sensitive, tricky moments in life.

They all ultimately make up who we are and why we do what we do. But most of us don’t spend the time or have the guidance and tools to sort through all those memories and what I call “story matter” in a way that allows our nervous system and central belief system–our sense of self– to feel calm, cool, and collected.

So we send our trickiest story-matter to the depths…. Yup, suppression. Compartmentalization. Sweeping under the rug.

Sweeping under the rug

I teach story work because, year after year, I am able to witness transformations happen at a deep internal level.

The people I work with get clear and compassionate on how they became who they are. They heal. They learn to love and accept themselves. And more importantly, they get to write the rest of their story of who they are becoming to the world in a more empowered & purposeful way.

The thing is, most of us don’t make time for all of this, because we’re really good at compartmentalizing and being productive.

But chances are, even in all that productivity & revenue-generating or mission-building activity, evidence of that suppression is showing up.

And it’s affecting your business and your path forward.

Maybe it’s that pit in your stomach every time you think about making promotional content.

Maybe it’s the amount of time you’ve spent putting off doing the next accelerating thing– like putting up your website, pitching yourself to interviews & conferences, designing an online course, showing up as the face of your social media rather than hiding behind generic branding and infographics.

Maybe it’s how fuzzy your vision feels because imposter syndrome creeps up every time you think about expanding or taking the next step.

If you can relate to any of this, again, big hugs to you. You’re not alone.

This process doesn’t have to take years of intensive study or therapy. It just takes some structure, some somatic support, some writing systems, and a supportive, safe space to get feedback, encouragement, direction, and connection.

My choice to work with heart-led founders means that I get to witness beautiful services, necessary thought-leadership, and inspiring ideas come to life as founders get clear on their vision, their worth, their messaging, and how to speak to their audience to cultivate them into their community.

Internal blocks cleared. Time saved. Voice nailed. Story crafted. Messaging dialed-in. Curriculum frameworks designed. Vision fortified. Community built.

It’s so inspiring.

Tomorrow, I’ll send over this week’s prompt & Sessions essay: How Your Story Shows Up Everywhere in Your Business.
